[News] Lee An: Home is where the heart is (The Jakarta Post, 04/18/2009)

Lee An: Home is where the heart is
Dian Kuswandini , The Jakarta Post , JAKARTA Sat, 04/18/2009 2:10 PM People

When Korean singer Lee An explains why he relocated to Singapore, he talks up the business logic of the move. But it soon becomes clear that what really tipped the scales is that he fell in love.

It wasn’t some enchanting Singaporean girl that captured the heart of the tall, 29-year-old Seoul-born heartthrob, but rather the enchanting mood of the Lion City itself.

“The first time I came to Singapore in 2006 for a show, I suddenly felt comfortable. I felt good about it,” Lee An reveals.

It was an unusual move – most Korean stars look to China, Japan or Taiwan to get their international break – and a brave decision, but ultimately a smart pick.

“When the recording company came to me for the first time [in 2006], they said: ‘We know most singers start in Japan and Taiwan. But why not try another Asian country like Singapore?’” Lee An says.

And because he felt good about Singapore, Lee An agreed to build his base there and make the country his second home.

“I know that most Korean singers go to China because it has a bigger market,” he says during a recent visit to Jakarta. “But I see Singapore as a promising Asian market for the future; it can expand.”

Of course, the business math is only part of it; he speaks enthusiastically of the charms of his adopted country.

“When you’re in China and Japan, you only get to know Chinese and Japanese culture. But in Singapore, it’s multicultural: Malay, Indian and Chinese. It’s very interesting!”

So off he went, setting up his international base in Singapore, far from his home in Seoul, where he left everything he had: his parents and sister, (now ex) girlfriend and thriving career.

“It was hard at the beginning. Everything I did [in Singapore] was the first time for me,” says Lee An, who admits he still can’t forget the girl he left back in Seoul.

Back in Korea, he says, he had already built a solid career in the entertainment industry. He had appeared in several dramas and movies, including Lovely Rivals, The Guy Was Cool and Mr. Hong – all produced in 2004. He had hosted a radio program and was spokesman for French cosmetic brand Thalgo in Korea.

Singing, surprisingly enough, came later down the track.

“Yes, I started my career as a producer, not a singer,” Lee An says.

It was always a producer job that he wanted, even though he studied singing in the United States for about 18 months.

“At that time, my dream was to become a producer, not a singer,” he says. “So when I returned to Korea, I started to produce songs [for other musicians].”

Before long, though, his heart was yearning to sing and, with support from many people, Lee An shifted his focus.

At least, he says, he can now be his own producer.

“I got the chance to produce my second album,” Lee An says, referring to his album US (2008), released a year after his debut The Birth.

But whereas many Korean artists leave their fans lost in translation by singing in their mother tongue only, Lee An has tried a different approach.

“I thought if I can reach people through many languages, maybe we can be closer.”

On his second album, he sings in Korean and Mandarin. On the third, currently underway, he will try singing in English and Indonesian.

“You know, I also love to listen to Japanese songs, but I can’t understand the meaning,” he says.

Even though he says his Indonesian is not good, Lee An is willing to learn – and his loyal fans are making it easier for him.

“I have some fans in Indonesia who teach me Bahasa sometimes when we chat [online]. One of them also gave me an Indonesian–Korean dictionary,” he adds, smiling.

It’s easy to understand, then, why Lee An respects his fans so much. For him, fans are more than just people who buy his albums and cheer.

“You know, I’m a foreigner, but they’re very kind to me. They even prepare food for me sometimes,” he says.

“I’m alone, far away from home, but I have my fans taking care of me. So I don’t feel like a singer with some fans [around me]. I feel like we’re all friends and family.”

Nevertheless, Lee An’s homeland is still in his heart.

And because of his international popularity, Lee An was chosen as an ambassador by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) to promote his home country to the world.

“I had my video clips filmed in Jeju to promote Korea,” Lee An says, referring to the famously beautiful island.

The scenery in the videos is so beautiful that Lee An jokes that people are more interested in watching them than in seeing him onstage.

He has also introduced the Korean wave or Hallyu to the international public. The Hallyu has been infecting Asia recently, including Indonesia, thanks to popular Korean dramas and music.

The new envoy job will make Lee An even busier this year, but he works it in alongside his music, as he did in Jakarta, promoting both his country and his songs.

“Now I’m still looking for some Indonesian musicians to collaborate with me,” he says, naming local band Mocca as among those he adores.

In paving his way to Indonesia, Lee An hopes to reach out to more individuals in sharing his music. And because Singapore and Indonesia are only not that far away (and less than one hour by plane), surely it’s possible Lee An might come to consider Indonesia his third home?

Celebrate Black Day with Lee An

http://k-popped.com/2009/04/celebrate-black-day-with-lee.html

14 April 2009
Celebrate Black Day with Lee An
K-POPPED! EXCLUSIVE

Lee An, a Korean singer based in Singapore is single and available. He invites YOU to eat Jjajangmyeon with him on Black Day.

Background music 'Ficton' (픽션), from Lee An's 1st album The Birth

Now, get to know Lee An in this EXCLUSIVE K-popped! Interview...

Stage name: Lee An
Real name: Lee An
Date of birth: 27th Apr 1980
Height: 178cm
Weight: 62kg
Blood type: A
Hobbies: Car racing, Scuba-diving
Family: Grand mother, Father, Mother, Sister and Me
Education: Parkland College, USA

SINGAPORE: You are currently based in Singapore. Why did you choose to be based there and what do you like most about Singapore?
Lee An: I had a chance to visit Singapore for a performance for a Korean community event back in 2006. At that time I was also planning to explore my career as a musician to countries outside of my homeland. While I was in Singapore I fell in love with the place, I like Singapore as a ‘food paradise’, the cleanliness and most of all the friendly people. Moreover I think Singapore is one of the centralised hub to connect to other South East Asian countries. These are the reasons I chose Singapore to be my music base.

HOMETOWN: Where is your hometown and what do you miss most about it?
Lee An: My hometown is Seoul. What I miss most about is my grandmother’s cooking. She always cooked for me when I stayed at home. Especially when I’m sick, I will really miss her cooking.

MUSIC: Tell us about your music – who/ what inspires you and how would you categorise your music?
Lee An: I like all kinds of music, but especially more for rock music. I hope to experiment more varying music styles for my next new album.

I was singing for a rock band since I was a high school student. At that time I love to sing songs from Bon Jovi & Metalica. Their music was what gave me the inspiration to start my music life.

NOT KOREA: Why didn’t you start your singing career in South Korea?
Lee An: I did have my singing career in Korea but I was into creating songs for other singers as I was also a music producer then. I was really interested in all kinds of creation works related music. After my first visit to Singapore, the local music company proposed to me to start my singing career here in Singapore. After some consideration, I decided to start here. No other Korean singers have started around these regions hence I decided to take up the new challenge. My wish is that being here I can also have an exchange in our individual music specialties, not just on Korean pop music.

SOUTH EAST ASIA: On the scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being “having the most potential”, what do you think is the potential for Kpop music in South East Asia, especially Singapore and Malaysia?
Lee An: I think the potential for Kpop music in South East Asia is a “7 ”.
After a couple of years trying to work on music here, I realised that each country’s music has its own different attraction. Different songs, and different styles of singing, so it’s not possible to say which is good or not good enough.

Kpop has good advantage from the K Wave, which is made popular from dramas and movies. So it’s not only Kpop music itself which is special, it also receives good influences from multiple entertainment area.
Lee An: As a Korean singer, I would like to say thank you to South East Asian people who loves the Korean culture.

But it does not mean I just use the K wave as an advantage, I hope I can exchange more music experiences with regional musicians. And from there, I hope to create more music which is unique and special, for the people who loves music.

COMING SOON: You’ve been actively promoting your music – mostly in Singapore – for the past two years. And now, you have plans to break into other South East Asian countries. Tell us, what do you have in store for us over the next two years?
Lee An: Yes, my actual promotional activities were mostly focused in the past one year. Before that I still needed to set up many things as a foreign artiste into a foreign land. I wished I had visited other South East Asian countries earlier, but did not have the chance till December last year.

Finally I started my promotion in Indonesia from last January, at the same time I had the chance to introduce my music to Taiwan and Hong Kong too. Apart from this, since last year I have also started to work closely with many Korean government agencies who promotes Korean tourism to SEA countries.

I’m very happy to be someone who is able to be a cultural bridge in between countries.
For the next two years, I will work hard for my music career in the area of Korea-SEA music exchange, introduce Korea to SEA, and also to introduce SEA to Korea.

COLLABORATION: You were a music producer for 6 years before launching your singing career and during that time, you’ve worked with many artists on their album. Among those you’ve worked with, who would you like to collaborate with as a singer?
Lee An: My all time idol is Korean singer Lee Seung Chul (이승철), I think he is a great musician and possesses a good voice which is really suitable for ballads. I had the chance to work with him on one album project in the past and even a short appearance in his MV. Listening to him has a calming effect and the lyrics to his songs are very touching and sometimes bring tears to the eye. If I have the chance, Lee Seung Chul will be the one whom I wish to be able to collaborate with in singing.

MANDARIN: You’re learning Mandarin and have even used the language in some of your songs. Tell us a funny incident while learning Mandarin.
Lee An: Yes, I practised Mandarin very hard for my EP album, “Us”. When I produced it in Korea, I called on support singers for the chorus part, however they have never sung in Mandarin before. They have only 30 minutes to practise the exact pronunciation, so it was really too short a time for them! In the end I had to record the chorus part by myself with multiple recordings. After that, I arranged all the voice into one.

Another challenge was for the ‘r’ sound, it is a bit difficult for Koreans to pronounce. So if you listen carefully, you will notice ‘li zi’ from my lyrics. It is supposed to be ‘ri zi’, but even though I knew it, during the recording I couldn’t correct it.

For learning Mandarin, I used to tell the media about ‘la bi xiao xin’ animation ‘lao shi’. I learned many basic expressions from the comic character. However, most other Mandarin phrases I have learnt from friends & fans. One particular phrase which I have learned from a friend was ‘000 jiu shi 000”, so when someone asks me a question which I could not answer due to my limited knowledge in Mandarin, I will respond in the fashion for example: “Ni yao qu ma?”, “wo bu yao”, “wei shen me?”, “bu yao jiu shi bu yao”. So now others have labelled this to be ‘Lee An’s’ style of conversation! (Laughs) yes, but I know I should stop using this phrase, otherwise my Mandarin will have no improvement.

JAJANGMYEON: Will you be eating jajangmyeon come April 14? (That is us asking if you’re still single and available? ;-))
Lee An: Yes, I will be eating jajangmyeon come April 14. It tells people I’m still single, yes. Actually I have already eaten jajangmyeon for pre Black Day celebration with my friends. You can see it in the Video clip! ;-)

여자친구: Please describe your ideal girl and what you would do to show her how special she is?
Lee An: My ideal girl is someone who is ‘cute’ and ‘feminine’. Most important thing is I need to have a special feeling that I can connect with the ‘girl’. Without this inner feeling the relationship would be meaningless.

MALAYSIA: When will you be coming to Malaysia?
Lee An: I hope to be there around July or August with my new album promotion. Hope to meet more people, and to share my music and hope they will like it. Also I would love to meet K-Popped! (Aww...thanks. We would love to meet you too! Thank you for granting us this interview and we wish you all the best in your career! Readers...leave Lee An a Black Day message...)

[News] LEE AN WANTS TO CREATE INDONESIAN SONG

BINTANG no.936 (2nd week of April 2009)

title of the article: LEE AN WANTS TO CREATE INDONESIAN SONG

* Thanks for the scan & translation, eve

LEE AN WANTS TO CREATE INDONESIAN SONG

Don't you feel long time since Indonesia had been visited by Korean Singer? That's why it's quite surprised when Lee An suddenly visited Indonesia. It is not for hold a concert, but he choosed by KTO (Korean Tourism Organization) to promote Korean Tourism in Indonesia. Mention on Lee An's name is a little odd, eventhough this is his second time visited Indonesia. This time, beside Jakarta, the owner of Album "The Birth" and "Us" also come to Surabaya and Bandung for the same event, album promotion and promote Korean Tourism all at once.

In between his activites to promote Korean Tourism, Bintang got a chance to meet and chat with Lee An at Shangrilla Hotel, Jakarta. It's fun because Lee An not only promote about the Korean tourism but he also willing to tell about his experiences and his impressions about Indonesia, including share about his full agenda activities until he can't enjoy Jakarta and Surabaya itself. "I just arrived at Jakarta, took a little rest, then have to do interviews. Tomorrow, at 5 am has to go to Bandung, and then back again to Jakarta. And the day after, go to Surabaya, and I just arrived again in Jakarta this morning. Then has to go to TV Station, and now has to attend this event. So, I can't control the schedules," share him whispered while glanced to the committee. Bintang giggled when Lee An shared like that, and suggest, "Because of that, next time come here again just for holiday, not work!" Lee An nodded. But although tired, Lee An happily answer the questions asked by Bintang.

(B) : This morning I watched you in Dahsyat. How did you feel performed in an Indonesian music show?
(LA) : Oh yes. I met 3 hosts who very funny and great, Raffi, Luna, Olga. They were funny.

(B) : I saw your fans always come wherever you go, aren't they?
(LA) : yes. They come from Indonesia and some from Singapore. They just flied to Jakarta last night. We hold a fanmeeting here. They are very nice, bring me newspapers with my article in it. I don't have time to buy it, but they bought it for me. I want to say thank you so much to them. They also send my article from Indonesia too. Even there is someone who gave me Korean-Indonesia dictionary. They said, I have to learn Indonesian language, so next time when we meet again we can talk in Indonesian.

(B) : Do you have plan to come back again to Indonesia?
(LA) : Yes, I have plan to come to Indonesia again, because I want to release a new album this year. I don't now when yet, but I want to release album in Indonesia too. Indonesian people are so nice. This time I come to Indonesia with KTO. Our main purpose, is to promote Korean Tourism. Because I work in entertainment in foreign country too, they asked me to join. I think it was a good idea. We started to work together since last year, at winter. We bring tourist groups to Korea and I accompanied them in the tour. I together with them, asked them to play ski, tought them to cook Korean food, like a tour guide. Last year we bring the tour group from Singapore, but this year we want to invite tourist from Indonesia to visit Korea.

(B) : I heard your songs use 2 languages, Korean and Mandarin, don't you?
(LA) : Yes. In my 2nd album, I tried to sing in Korean and Mandarin. Because this album released in Singapore, they can't speak Korean, so I decided to sing a few parts in Mandarin. But for my next album, I think I will try to sing one or two songs in Indonesian.

(B) : Wah, really?
(LA) : Yes. I'm very interesting in Japan and Indonesian music. But when I heard it, I only can enjoy the music, without understand the lyrics. That's why I think it will be better if there are one or two Indonesian songs in my album. With that, my audiences also can understand and feel my songs. I'm not good in languages, but I will try. All languages are hard, especially mandarin, because they have 4 different sounds. We talk with different language, but music is the same. Because music is universal. I hope I can meet Indonesian artists. That will be a big chance for me if I can meet and collaborate with them.

(B) : Beside singer, you also an actor, don't you?
(LA) : Yes. I acted in some films, but only in a few part. I'm interesting in acting too, especially at live show. Like singing and acting on the same stage. I really love it. I feel that I can show my emotion and my expression to the audiences.

(B) : Why did you choose Singapore, not like other Korean artists who mostly clear away to Japan and China?
(LA) : Exactly I have chance to clear away Singapore at 2006. Then I met people from the recording company there, and they suggested, why not release an album in Singapore? As singer, why only in Korea? I can go outside. It is correct that mostly Korean singer went to Japan. But for me, why have to only Japan? Asian countries not only Japan and Korea. Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, also countries in Asia.

(B) : So you deliberated find a place that different from other Korean singers?
(LA) : Yes, most of Korean singers like Japan, china, Taiwan more and some goes to Thailand. I don't know why.

(B) : Is it not because the music market is bigger there?
(LA) : Music market, I don't think so. If you want the market that really big, why don't you go to America? So I don't know why, and can't say is it right or not. I just do what I want to do. Beside I think Indonesia also cool.

(B) : When did you start to play music?
(LA) : Exactly, when I started to play music, my purpose was to be a producer, not singer. But when I started to produce music, many people said, Why don't I become a singer? That time I didn't feel sure. yeah is it right?

(B) : Who is your favourite singer?
(LA) : I really love Lee Sung Chool, he is a senior Korean singer. His voice is very powerful and beautiful. Until now his performance still very nice and I like it so much. He knew me and I knew him, and i really respect him. He's very nice.

(B) : Who is you favourite Western musician?
(LA) : Hmm, if it from America, so many. I like rock musician such as Mettalica, Bon Jovi. I love rock music so much. That's why I really like in Indonesia, because many rock bands here. I really want to have a chance to sing with band in Indonesia. You're very lucky because so many good bands in here.

(B) : Did you ever hear songs from Indonesian bands?
(LA) : Yes, I've heard many Indonesian songs. I like Mocca's songs. A lot of Korean people who love their songs.

[News] 관광공사, 인구대국 印尼관광객 유치활동 박차 4th Apr Yonhap News
